Introduction

Facing history is a course that allows students to take a deeper look into the world’s ideology and how we as humans can be manipulated and taught to forming opinions about other people. This course is very interesting because many classes don’t cover many of the controversial topics that this course centers around. Facing history also is a great place for kids to take a deeper look into who they are and what kind of person they want to be. In this course one of the main points we cover is you someone who will stand by and let injustice happen to people who cannot fend for themselves. Or are you someone who will confront problems and not let crimes against your fellow humans be swept under the rug by other people who are not strong enough to face the problem head on.
One of the main reasons why I chose this course was because I love history. History has always been my favorite classes since I have been young and I have always wanted to learn more about this topic. Once I heard that there was a class about the holocaust that focused on how such a horrible event could have taken place I knew I had to sign up. The second reason why I chose this course was because I heard that it was not just lectures and readings, you actually watch videos on what it was like to live in Germany in the late 1930s early 1940s. In addition the course focuses on primary sources and I had not seen or read a lot about the holocaust, so I thought it would be an interesting class. Another reason why I took this class is because I have been lucky enough to travel a lot with my family and I have seen many different cultures and how they view others. For example when I was in Turkey I saw a man who had a young wife sitting in our hotel lobby. I was only eight but I remember seeing when the man got up the women’s hijab got stuck on the couch and fell off. The man stuck his wife twice and ran off screaming. After seeing this I knew that one day I should learn about why other people feel they are better than others and feel that hurting others is alright.
